3D Maps! DLC Review SOCOMFANS Forums
February 09, 2010
We had a post the other day talking asking you how you feel about the new specialization's introduced into the game - but it has still been rather unclear about how exactly it works, hopefully until now. SkiMask- over at the SOCOM forums notes the following, which all appear to be legit:

To have a specialization weapon, you must select what your Primary and Secondary weapons in the menu so you will be able to earn CE points. To earn CE points, you need to get kills with your Primary or Secondary gun you have chosen as your specialization.

- A kill is worth 2 CE points
- An assist is worth 1 CE point

Once you earn enough CE points, you can unlock the following items:

PRIMARY:
- Custom Attachment (100 points)
- Unlocked Weapon (400 points)
- Gold Star (600 points)

SECONDARY:
- Specialized Attachment (300 points)
- Silver Star (450 points)

The custom attachments and specialized attachments include the following (applicable to all weapons in that class):

Assault Rifle - Front Grip
Sniper - Bi Pod
Machine Gun - Scope (4x and 10x zoom)
SMG - Silencer
Shotgun - Front Grip
Pistol - Blue Laser

The primary unlocked weapons include the following:

Assault Rifle - Alice (Camo HK36)
SMG - Motoko (Camo F90)
Pistol - Gladys (Gold DE)
Sniper - Tilly (Camo SR-25)
Machine Gun - Gloria (Camo MK)
Shotgun - Vera (Camo USAS 12)

Some other notes include the following: You can use these primary unlocked guns for both sides (Special Forces or Mercenaries). An important note is by switching class will reset your collected CE points to 0, unless you are switching your secondary to primary and in that case you lose HALF. This means you can not collect or have a specialization in all the weapons at one time.

Finally, the review you have all been anxiously awaiting to read....right? Well we are finally glad to let you know how we feel! It's been well over a month since the release, plenty of time for us to figure out what we like, what we don't, so let's do this, SOCOMFANS.com style.

The good:

+ MAPS - If there is one thing Slant 6 and the team did well before the DLC was the quality of the maps. They are highly detailed and quite exciting (sure there might be one too many exploding cars or barrels, but forgot those) Cold Front maps are just as great - plus, there are five of them. Based on a cold and snow theme, these maps add some much needed change from the original seven maps, and feature some dynamic additions like blizzard conditions or light snow. There are still quite a few explodable items (and even snowman), but the maps are still great. Let's look at them more closely:

Blizzard:

Blizzard

One of the classics from previous SOCOM's, Blizzard is back and as good as ever. The blizzard conditions here provides a challenge for most, but also provide a haven for snipers lurking on high points and in trees. The maps change in elevation can prove to be an advantage for the team taking high ground, but also can provide an opportunity for someone to sneak under you.

In a somewhat controversial move, the SOCOM team decided to introduce a specialization feature for the weapons - something seen in other games, but something that has never been seen in SOCOM before. The biggest surprise for most has to be the team seemed to just introduce it when the community has never requested it, especially when the game is still missing things the community wants to see.

But nonetheless, you can now assign what weapon you would like to have as a primary specialization, as well as a secondary specialization. To get access to these guns, you need to accumulate CE points. To get these CE points, you have to get kills. Pretty simple, right? Once you get enough points for your selected primary specialization, then you have access to the following improved guns:

- Assault Rifles = Alice

- Machine Guns = Georgia

- Sniper Rifles = Tilly

- Shotguns = Vera

- Pistols = Gladys

With the addition of these guns, a lot of people have been upset with the accuracy and power of these better guns, claiming they are much easier to kill people now. How you feel about them? You use them?

Well over the couple days we were down - some news happened out there in the SOCOM world, so we are playing catchup. The big story was Abigale posting in the SOCOM.com forums about people losing their CE points. The big problem she noted was that the internal QA team has not be able to replicate this, so the team is asking for your help.

If you are having an issue losing your CE points - the team is asking you to answer the following questions:

- When CE is lost, does it only lose what you've just gained in your last paying session, or does all of your CE get wiped?

- Has this happened with any specialty type that you've used, or just one specialty type?

- Has anyone had this occur multiple times to their CE? If you've had this occur multiple times, do you see any usage patterns that lead to the issue occuring? For example, the same gametype being played, was there a disconnect each time when this happened?

- Anything else that you believe is relevant to this issue?

If you are having problems and want to help - you can add your post to the forum post here

If things look a little different around here  - its because they are. We have changed the site around for what we feel is the better. Although I have been working on it the last three days, not everything is quite complete yet.

I decided instead of keeping it down to put the site back online, so you might notice some other changes in the new few days. Hopefully you guys like it - we would love to hear your feedback here or in the forums.

Keep checking back for all your SOCOM news and updates, as well as future tournaments and 3D maps.
